Jaju is a traditional Korean liquor whose name translates to “purple wine,” inspired by its distinctive, elegant hue. Produced by Kooksoondang, a brewery renowned for Baekseju and Makgeolli, Jaju is crafted from rice and infused with natural herbs, resulting in a smooth texture, gentle sweetness, and subtle herbal undertones. Unlike everyday table drinks, it was designed as a more refined and premium expression, reinterpreting historical Korean liquors that were valued for both their unique colour and delicate flavour. Although not as widely distributed today as Kooksoondang’s more popular lines, Jaju remains a symbolic example of Korea’s effort to preserve and modernise its traditional alcoholic heritage.
